Alan Bullard: Joining The Dots - Book 2

Bog | Klaver solo

Komponist: Alan Bullard
Format: Nodehæfter | Studie
Joining the Dots offers pianists lots of material to help build confidence and skill in sight-reading. The series brings together a range of activities to help students improve their sense of keyboard geography, helping them to read new music more quickly and easily.

The five books cover the requirements for ABRSM's sight-reading tests at each of Grades 1 to 5, and include:

  • many short, characterful pieces to sight-read, in a range of approachable musical styles
  • warm-up and technical exercises, to establish basic hand shapes and finger patterns within each key
  • simple improvisation exercises in which students can explore musical ideas and familiarise themselves further with the 'feel' of each key
  • longer solo pieces and a duet, for additional sight-reading practice or to learn quickly and play through for fun

This is a great product & teaches pupils a full understanding of the keys they need at this level. It gives a systematic rather than random approach to sight reading & also makes linking theory & performance easier.

Very well laid out - helps students to understand the keyboard geography of different keys, also encourages creativity.

All 5 grades are great - break from john kember as a pupil approaches exam to work around the keys

Once again an excellent book for the young learning pianist or anyone wishing to learn to read music generally.

Some useful ideas in the book for those who are competent but looking to improve at sight reading. However for people who are really struggling with their sight reading I found the Paul Harris book of more use.

Gave this to my daughter's piano teacher who thought it was very good. She is a poor sight reader and is studying grade 4. I wanted to start at a level lower as I felt she had some gaps to fill. Her teacher said it is perfect for her and considers it around grade 3 level.

Really good book for pupils who find sightreading difficult.

Very useful series stretching sight-reading into general musicianship. Students love the variety and then approach exam sight-reading with much better insight.

This book gives some levelled structure to those working at improving their sightreading. The books are clear and well laid out. Pieces are at an appropriate level for grades and of appropriate length. There are pieces in the book that are longer than you would ever get in an exam, but these can be broken down into sections if required.

Fantastic, this is the sight-reading series teachers have been waiting for. Lots of short examples, with imaginative titles, and exercises to get the feel of each key required for ABRSM sight-reading Grade 2 exam. My only criticism is that there's not enough material for someone just starting out reading at Grade 2 level and learning to read 2 staves at once - it's a big jump up from the Grade 1 book in this series.

I've just bought a range of these titles for my pupils. The format is accessible and objectives clearly sign-posted. Great that you can dip in to the sections by key - providing resources for simultaneous learning.

Really like these new teaching aids. They are wonderful for building up Sight-reading techniques and key recognition and can be used in lessons or at home. A more fun way to approach sight-reading. Recommend.
