Masters Of Jazz: Johnny Griffin

Kunstner: Johnny Griffin
Format: Audio / Video | Indspillet opførelse
In the 1950s, American tenor-saxophonist Johnny Griffin earned the title of the “Fastest tenor in the West” and his virtuosic play is clearly demonstrated on the eight fantastic tracks on this CD. The ‘Little Giant’ is in his element in these performances, we find him playing to enthusiastic audiences in three jazz sessions at Copenhagen’s Montmartre and Slukefter clubs, stretching out on some of his favourite compositions by J. J. Johnson, Diz, Lester Young, Monk and Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt. He is in especially good form on two energetic outings with his old Tough Tenors partner, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis supported throughout by an excellent rhythm section.

There are plenty of Billie Holiday-compilations available, including radio broadcasts from the late forties and early fifties, but often in inferior sound and sloppy editing. And although not high fidelity, the two complete broadcasts here (eight tracks from early 1949 (or maybe late ’48) and the 14 October ’51 songs from Boston’s Storyville Club) sound cleaner than ever and reveal that there were, in spite of her personal problems, lots of exciting details. A slightly boppish Red Norvo septet (featuring a sparkling Jimmy Rowles) is backing her on the former, and a somewhat chugging Buster Harding trio on the latter, but no matter what, her singing, straight from the heart, never fails to give you goose pimples. Her phrasing is often very loose, making most of the songs quite different from the studio-recorded versions.
