It's miles better than the book I had when I was growing up called Rudiments of Music, which was not written in everyday English of our times. This book is easier to understand.

It has visuals that are helpful.
I don't like that like a lot of books it explains things, sometimes, three-quarters of the way when it should explain things all the way and could do just as easily. For example, p. 20 does not explain what 3/8 time is. It explains what 2/4 time and 6/8 time etc. is but not specifically 3/8, which showed up as a question in a previous example.

This book has a reputation for being the go-to ABRSM Grades 1-5 music theory manual. However, it turns out that if you are taking the grade 5 theory test, this book does not contain all that is covered in grade 5 on the exam nowadays. You will need the blue book also, and that book has a reputation for being for grades 6 -- 8. Clearly, that must have changed over the years but you will find that out on your own along the way. I'm glad I decided to buy both books together so I got a discount on both :)

It's not easy to distinguish which symbol used in the book is for the inverted turn but my teacher helped me with that.

Which brings me to another point, of you do happen to be self-taught and want to use this book, which is a good book, it's good to have access to a piano teacher from time to time.

Excellent resource for teachers to teach students music theory. Just the right amount of detail to ensure your students pass their theory exams.

The reference book to have if you need to know anything covered by the Grades 1 - 5 syllabi. Logically laid out in subject chapters, with cross references to the companion 'Music Theory in Practice' workbooks, I issue it to all students using these books!

Comprehensive and very condensed - takes great concentration to read and digest but seems the best single volume I have found on the subject.

Excellent and easy to follow. I have used this book in conjunction with the AB Music theory books for many years and, used correctly, it provides lots of easily explained information on a subject many children and adults find quite daunting.

Bought this thinking it included theory exercises but it didn't. Maybe the advert could be a bit more precise, but the content was really good.

Excellent book for using alongside actual lessons with a qualified teacher. But can be used just as well for those people who are self-taught

Clear and concise, presented in reader-firendly layout with a helpful index at the back, this book is an important companion in the learning of music theory. Extra examples or even practice questions are lacking however.

Very valuable for that piece of sheet music that has just the one symbol on it that you don't understand. It makes a great reference book but the way it is written is very much like a school book and not very easy to understand. I would still recommend it for just the sake of finding out when a symbol is killing you! Very concise up to grade 6 piano i would say. I recommend, good price too!

My daughter who is 9 found this an extremely useful reference book for her grade 5 theory. The only criticism is that it is not particularly child- friendly, accurate and informative as it is. Although she managed well with it it could have grasped her attention and thereby aided her memory retention more if there was a version with language and visuals aimed at the younger player, but nevertheless straighforward to use.

This was recommended by my music tutor as being one of the best theory books. I agree it is the best I have come across to date.

My children seemed to be getting nowhere with music theory, as going to classes, or paying for private tuition was difficult. I've decided to teach them myself, and this book is really helping me understand theory (I did G5 theory over 30 years ago), and help them as they work through the ABRSM booklets. I strangely enjoy reading it as it's very clear and ordered. It's probably a bit too complex for the kids (aged 13 and 10) to follow by themselves. Thoroughly recommended for older children of parents - have a go and save time and money.

I am also 65 and, with my excellent teacher many years my junior, I find that this book helps me further to understand what she is teaching me. It never hurts to get the teaching and explanation from more than one source and this book is excellent for just that.

I am now at Grade 4 book and, whilst my teacher is very good, I clearly have myopia at times. Perhaps at 65 I am just not learning as well as I once did!!! I strongly recommend using this book as an invaluable supplement to theory learning - it works so well with the theory books and, I am sure, will make all the difference to my exam results.

Well written guide to music theory that has succeeded in reminding me of all the things I learned at school. Highly recommended.

I have had this book for a few months and it has taught me all I need to know to complete the ABRSM Music Theory in Practice books to grade 3. It is written in almost academic style so I wouldn't recommend it for a young child.

Easy to use alongside the music theory in practice work books, as enables students to work alone too

All you need to know for the early grade theory exams in a compact handy to carry book. I deal for teachers to cover the knowledge for students of a variety of standards.

Perfect introduction for a late-starter like me, only just learning piano after children have flown the nest and having no knowledge of theory at all..
